Gifts

We all like to receive gifts. We also like to earn rewards. Sometimes we can confuse one with the other. A gift is something that is given to us whether or not we deserve it. For each one of us, salvation is a gift of God that we can do nothing to earn. We receive the full benefit of it without any need to pay for it because Jesus has paid for it on our behalf. On the other hand, the Bible speaks in many places about rewards. These are things that God has stored up for faithful service. The rewards are not the motivation for our service – that should flow out of our love for, and gratitude to, God for all that he has done for us. However, we can be confident that God has even more for us than he has already given us. These rewards will come as a consequence of our walk with him. Thus, we can live now in the grace of God, with the confident expectation of more to come! We serve a good God!
